The Ofsted national standards require the person in charge of a nursery and the deputy to have an appropriate level 3/4 qualification. In addition, at least half of the remaining staff must hold an appropriate level 3 qualification. Here at the Hummingbirds Nursery our staff hold or are working towards a level 3 or above qualification in childcare. Our manager holds a level 6 and deputy manager holds a level 3 qualification.
Our primary aim is to create a working environment which allows our staff to achieve their full potential and achieve their personal ambitions. We ensure staff develop their qualifications and attend courses in areas such as EYFS modules, inclusion and special needs, safeguarding, equality and diversity, Makaton and behaviour management. We expect all staff to obtain first aid and food hygiene qualifications within six months of appointment, and to keep these up to date.
Children will self-register themselves upon entry to the nursery, they will find their name/picture card at the registration table and place it in their registration box. During registration children go through the calendar, learning the days of the week, the date and the months in the year. Children will also sing a weather song and discuss what the weather is like on that day. Staff will play a jolly phonics song, this allows children to sound out letters and eventually children are able to sound out and recognise the letters in their names.
Toddlers will find their picture card and place it in their registration box. They will go through the calendar with their practitioners and sing the weather song collectively. Pre-schoolers: Pre-schoolers will find their name card and place it in their registration box. When they find their name card, staff encourage the children to sound out the letters in their name. this allows them to begin to recognise letters in their names. Staff will then sing along to the jolly phonics song with the children enabling them to sound out letters.
